CBD May Counteract Symptoms of Psychosis

Pretty girl with mental problem and split personality

CBD has been gaining praise lately for it’s long list of medical and therapeutic benefits. The compound found in the cannabis plant, cannabidiol, has proven its ability to help relieve pain, anxiety, inflammation, lack of focus, and more. Now, it is rumored that the powerful compound may have the potential to counteract systems of psychosis.

Cannabidiol has been around for centuries, but has only recently been recognized for its natural power for health and therapeutic purposes.   It is continuing to gain attention as a potential (and powerful) treatment for serious conditions like cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease and Crohn’s disease, and more.

Now, a new brain imaging study suggests that a single dose of CBD can reduce the symptoms of psychosis (which includes delusions, hallucinations, or speaking incoherently) by “resetting” the activity in three main areas of the brain. This study has offered the very first evidence-based explanation on how CBD may counteract psychosis. Overall, these results could provide information that could be used to generate new and more effective treatments for people with mental health issues.

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a mental disorder characterized by a disconnection from reality. It typically occurs as a result of a psychiatric illness, such as schizophrenia, or can be caused from unknown health conditions, medications, drug use, and even lack of sleep, all of which can spark psychotic episodes.

Psychosis is not a single condition or disorder, per say, but instead is a symptom of other disorders combined, characterized by detachment from reality. Seeing, hearing or believing things that aren’t real are common symptoms. A person with psychosis is not usually aware of his or her behavior, and therefore may refuse treatment of any kind because they don’t believe anything is wrong.

The Study

A small study of 33 participants – all whom were currently experiencing psychotic symptoms – were joined with another small group of healthy participants, serving as the control group. Half of the psychosis group was given one 600mg oral dose of CBD, while the other half received an identical placebo capsule.

The control group didn’t receive any CBD. They didn’t receive any drug at all, actually.

All participants completed a memory task which was designed to engage three brain areas that have been previously linked to the onset of psychosis (the striatum, medial temporal cortex and midbrain).

Shortly after consuming CBD (and the placebo for those in the placebo group, along with the group that didn’t receive anything at all), everyone’s brains were examined with an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) scanner, which measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.

To give you a clearer understanding of what the fMRI scanner does: The technique relies on the fact that cerebral blood flow and neuronal activation are coupled. So, when an area of the brain is in use, blood flow to that region also increases, which is shown through the scanner.

The scans from the study showed abnormal activity in the brains of the participants who were experiencing psychosis symptoms, compared with the healthy control group. This was obviously expected.

But, the brains of those who had taken a dose of CBD showed less severe abnormalities than the brains of those who had taken a placebo, suggesting CBD was “resetting” abnormal activity in those three key brain areas mentioned before, hinting that CBD could be an effective treatment for people with psychosis.

The Conclusion of the Study

The study’s lead author, Dr. Sagnik Bhattacharyya from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College in London, commented on the results of the brain imaging study stating that “The results have started unraveling the brain mechanisms of a new drug (CBD) that works in a completely different way in comparison to traditional anti-psychotics.”

The next progression of the brain imaging study, which is already underway, is a large-scale human trial set to replicate the results of the initial study, to determine if CBD is a viable long-term treatment. If this is successful, then according to Dr. Sagnik, CBD would then be “immediately differentiated” from other medications on the market, including some that have been around since the 1950s, all of which have produced inconsistent results for patients with psychosis.

In fact, some of the most common (traditional) anti-psychotic medications have “notoriously severe side effects,” like muscle tremors and overpowering sedation.

Predictions of CBD as an Antipsychotic Medication

Dr. Bhattacharyya reported there is an urgent need for a safe treatment for young people at risk of psychosis, stating, “One of the main advantages of CBD is that it is safe and seems to be very well tolerated, making it in some ways an ideal treatment.”

He is optimistic about the treatment of CBD for people with psychosis, both from the results of the study, and because of the various benefits CBD has provided for people. He stated that, “If CBD turns out to be an effective anti-psychotic, these findings (from the brain imaging study) will highlight another striking paradox of a plant that science is only now really beginning to understand.”

Takeaways

  • Research and clinical trials are beginning to show CBD as an effective treatment for reducing psychosis.
  • Traditional anti-psychotic medication can have bad side effects, such as muscle tremors and overpowering sedation.
  • CBD is non-psychoactive and does not produce the “high” that is associated with the consumption of marijuana.
  • CBD has been shown to “reset” abnormal brain activity in three key brain areas, hinting that CBD could be an effective treatment for people with psychosis.

Breaking the Cannabis Stigma with CBD

The cannabis plant has been plagued by unjust and negative stigma for far too long, and CBD is starting to change that.

CBD is opening up the conversation about the cannabis plant – making it less taboo and more mainstream. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp strain of the cannabis plant, that is helping people of all ages live a better quality of life.

It is the wellness compound making headlines everywhere due to its health benefits, and has been shown successful in reducing pain, anxiety, improving focus and mood, decreasing seizures and more. CBD has also being noticed as an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, along with other ailments.

While some may still be skeptical of the compound due to the misguided hemp ban back in 1937, science continues to prove there really is no need for skepticism. Science is only beginning to scratch the surface of CBD’s potential. The proof of CBD’s success can be seen in scientific research and consumer feedback.   In some cases, people have referred to CBD as being “life changing.”

Here are 5 key ways CBD is breaking the cannabis stigma:

5 Ways CBD is Halting Negative Stereotypes

1. CBD Does Not Get You High

It doesn’t matter how much CBD you take, or the form in which CBD is administered: CBD will never get you high.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the compound in the cannabis plant responsible for getting users high. CBD products must contain no more than 0.3 percent THC to be considered legal cannabidiol. However, these restrictions can differ by state.

2. Hemp and Marijuana Are Two Different Plants

This one is confusing for people. Hemp and marijuana are strains of the cannabis plant. They are two completely different plants that are derived from the same family plant.

Hemp, often referred to as “industrial hemp,” is the fiber and seed part of the Cannabis Sativa L. plant, as opposed to the flower part of the plant which is legally considered and classified as marijuana. The fiber and seeds from the hemp part of the plan are of incredible value, which is why hemp is also referred to as a “cash crop.”

3. CBD is Legal

While CBD can be derived from either hemp or marijuana, the products on the market right now must be hemp-derived in order to be in good legal and safe standing according to federal and state laws.

As long as CBD contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, CBD is considered to be legal. However, be sure to check the regulations and restrictions for CBD within your state.

4. CBD is Safe For Anyone & Everyone

One of the most common reasons people are so fascinated by CBD is because it has shown – on multiple accounts – to be an effective treatment for health conditions in adults and children.

Children are taking it for ADHD, teenagers are taking it for depression, adults are taking it for anxiety, and everyone is taking it for pain, all with the resounding answer of “Yes, CBD works for me.”

The FDA has already approved the first cannabis medication for children with rare forms of onset epilepsy, further proving how CBD can improve the daily lives of those who take it.

In fact, CBD is even safe for your pets! Products for dogs and cats are available on the market. CBD works in the body the same way for all mammals through the Endocannabinoid System.

5. CBD is a Health Fad Here To Stay

Much of CBD’s appeal comes from the fact that it is available in a variety of products, such as oils, tinctures, creams, salves, facial scrubs, capsules, vape pens, and more. This allows CBD to be taken in multiple ways, for easy and convenient consumption.

CBD is further propelling the conscious consumer movement, as people are always looking for more natural solutions and products. CBD has become a wellness wonder, and has been shown to be more effective in comparison to antidepressant medications like Prozac and Zoloft.

Why? Because CBD is natural. CBD continues reduce people’s stress levels, anxiety, physical pain, and inflammation while supporting good overall health. In a marketplace where consumers are more and more conscious of what they’re consuming, natural alternatives like CBD are exactly what people want.

Cannabis is a remarkable plant with life-changing capabilities. In the very near future, it’s likely consumers will be able to pick up a bottle of CBD oil at common drug stores like CVS and Walgreens. Some hemp oil products are already available at various specialty and health food stores around the U.S.

Takeaways

  • CBD is beginning to break the negative stigma around the cannabis plant.
  • CBD is non-psychoactive and will not produce the “high” that is associated with the consumption of marijuana.
  • CBD can be used to reduce pain, anxiety, inflammation, ADHD, seizures, and more in both adults and children.
  • CBD is safe for children and adults thanks to it’s non-psychoactive nature.

Athletes & CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis, has been gaining praise recently for its long list of medical benefits. The cannabinoid has been gaining praise recently for its long list of medical benefits. People suffering from physical pain, anxiety, depression, IBS, and other conditions are finding relief through the use of CBD. In addition to this, research suggests that CBD can offer some significant benefits for athletes.

The therapeutic cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant (more formally regarded as cannabidiol), interacts with our body’s Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is full of naturally-occurring cannabinoids that help keep us at peak health.

CBD products can help anyone improve their health and well being. Athletes can benefit from the supplement in a variety of ways. Their overactive lifestyles are next-level compared to the general public.  Professional athletes and athletic individuals can turn to CBD for a pre-workout boost and post-workout recovery. Although these top athletes may be in perfect shape, many sports and other athletic activites can wear heavily on the body’s muscle tissue, joints and organs. Recovery after exercise is equally as important as exercise itself.

4  Ways CBD Can Benefit Athletic Performance:

1. CBD as a Pre-Workout: An Instant Energy Boost

While many people take CBD to get a better night’s rest or calm their nerves, CBD can also be utilized as an incredible supplement for energy. CBD works in a similar manner to coffee or a pre-workout protein shake, and can allow athletes to work harder and longer. However, with CBD, athletes won’t get the crash, jitters, or caffeine headache associated with some supplements.

Taking CBD as a pre-work out supplement may increase performance.

2. CBD Tames Inflammation From Sore Muscles

When you’re tearing your muscle tissue down regularly, your body is going to yell at you. Overworking your body can result in inflamed and painful muscle strains. This is very common in professional athletes. This continued wear on muscles can make their bodies constantly inflamed. and this continued wear on muscles can make their bodies constantly inflamed.

CBD can help reduce inflammation and soreness in muscles. Many topicals and pain creams can be used to take the pain away from strained muscles. This can be especially useful for athletes that play a variety of different sports and outdoor activities.

Causes of muscle spasms in athletes are usually linked to muscle strains, dehydration, or damage to the affected area.  CBD can help prevent and relieve these spasms thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties.

3. CBD Aids in Pain Management For Sports-Related Injuries

After an intense workout or training session, you will most likely feel tired, worn out, and sore. Often times athletes will try to find relief to these symptoms by using over the counter drugs such as Advil or Ibuprofen. Although consumption of these pain relievers is typically okay, many athletes rely on these drugs and take them on a consistent basis. This can be extremely dangerous, and can cause stomach bleeding in extreme cases.

For this reason, it’s suggested athletes stick to a more powerful, less toxic and naturally occurring substance, such as CBD to help cope and relieve pain. Athletes can use CBD topically or orally to reduce or relieve their pain depending on their preference.

CBD interacts with serotonin and vanilloid receptors in the brain to make this all possible. These receptors are known to influence mood and the perception of pain in the body.

4. CBD Helps with Post-Workout Recovery

Pain and post-workout recovery tend to go hand in hand in professional sports. If the pain isn’t addressed, it can lead to significant wear on muscles and lingering pain. In severe cases, this pain can prevent athletes from engaging in their favorite physical activities altogether.

In addition to CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects, CBD is known for reducing chronic and neuropathic pain.

In addition to all of the physical conditions, professional athletes may experience mental strain and anxiety due to pressure. This could stem from fans, fierce competition, or fear of getting injured. CBD can aid athletes in relieving pre-game pressure thanks to its wildly popular anti-anxiety properties.

Takeaways

  • CBD can be used as an effective pre-workout and post-workout supplement.
  • CBD is a natural pain-reliever that can help alleviate pain during and after exercise.
  • CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that offers protection for the body’s heart, lungs, and brain.
  • CBD can aid in the recovery process for professional athletes and athletic individuals.
  • CBD is natural and doesn’t have any psychoactive effects – meaning it cannot get users “high”

Cancer & CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis, has been gaining praise recently for its long list of medical benefits. People suffering from physical pain, anxiety, depression, IBS, and other conditions are finding relief through the use of CBD. Research also suggests that CBD could help cancer patients in various ways.

A recent study concluded that CBD given to mice with pancreatic cancer nearly tripled their survival rate compared to those not given CBD.

CBD could be the next big thing in cancer treatment. It has the potential to increase chances of survival and ease the painful symptoms and side effects of traditional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy.

“From a medical perspective, CBD is the most promising cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids like CBD interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System, or ECS, which is made up of cell receptors found throughout the human body – from our brains and organ tissues to our digestive and nervous systems – the Endocannabinoid System is responsible for regulating sleep, mood, appetite and immune function.”

From a medical perspective, CBD is the most promising cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids like CBD interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is made up of cell receptors found throughout the human body. Our brains, organs, digestive system, and nervous system all depend on the ECS for regulating sleep, mood, appetite, and immune function.

To summarize, the ECS promotes and maintains homeostasis, or “balance” within our bodies, keeping us happy, healthy and stable. CBD can cause a cascade of positive changes in a variety of systems throughout the body depending on the dosage and receptor that CBD interacts with.

Here are 5 more reasons CBD is great for cancer patients.

1. CBD May Stop Tumor Growth

Studies show that CBD can inhibit tumor growth, kill cancer cells and prevent more cancer cells from spreading.

In addition to the pain-relieving effects CBD has on cancer-associated symptoms, a large body of evidence shows that the compound can decrease tumor growth in animal models of cancer. It does this by modulating key cell signalling pathways involved in the control of cancer cell proliferation and survival.

2. CBD May Make Chemotherapy More Effective

Research shows CBD can make chemotherapy more effective when the two join forces. Cannabis has proven itself for years as an effective treatment for multiple forms of cancer. Those suffering from breast cancer, liver cancer, and leukemia have found relief from chemotherapy thanks to the use of cannabis. CBD could embody the same positive results that cannabis has had on cancer patients in the past.

CBD may help those suffering from cancer by controlling appetite, reducing feelings of nausea, vomiting, and swelling (people’s hands and feet tend to swell during chemotherapy). In addition to these, it could aid in neuropathic pain and could promote emotional health.

3. CBD Can Help with Cancer-Related Pain

CBD is well-known for its incredible pain-relieving properties. Cancer, no matter what kind, tends to cause some kind of pain. This pain is often unbearable and very frustrating for cancer patients. Typically, the pain is a result of treatments such as chemotherapy.

A study on patients with advanced cancer pain – despite chronic opioid dosing (a typical drug for pain) – found that patients experienced a reduction in cancer related pain of more than 3o percent when given a THC:CBD extract.

4. CBD Can Aid with Cancer-Related Depression

CBD is also widely known for its anti-anxiety and anti-depression effects. Patients can become depressed after being diagnosed with cancer. Often times cancer patients will feel hopeless as a result of their diagnosis. Not knowing the outcome or stage of cancer that they are in contributes to even more grief.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in four cancer patients struggle with clinical depression. Depression can negatively affect the  recovery process. CBD can help these individuals by improving mood and lessening the symptoms of sadness and depression following chemotherapy.

One study in particular found that a combination of THC and CBD produced antidepressant-like results in mice. Another study  from Washington State University, found that participants reported a 50 percent reduction in symptoms of depression while using a high CBD/low THC product.

5. CBD and Chemotherapy Induced Symptoms

Nausea can be one of the most challenging and unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. It can also be one of the most difficult symptoms to treat.

CBD can help patients better manage chemotherapy induced symptoms. It has the power to help regulate nausea, vomiting, and other digestive issues that cancer patients experience.

Another common side effect of chemotherapy is appetite. Many cancer paitnets struggle with a serious lack of appetite during chemotherapy treatment. CBD can help increase appetite by “fooling the brain’s central feeding system,” while activating a group of neurons called POMC, or proopiomelanocortin, to help stimulate appetite and stop weight loss.

Takeaways

  • CBD has the potential to successfully treat a host of health issues, including cancer.
  • Numerous claims have been made saying CBD has the potential to be one of the most effective treatments for cancer on the market.
  • CBD can help with the cancer-related pain induced by chemotherapy.
  • CBD can aid with symptoms of anxiety and depression that often follow cancer diagnosis.
  • CBD has proven to be an excellent anti-nauseating agent, and can increase appetite, helping cancer patients maintain their weight.

10 Ways CBD Can Benefit Healthy People

If you perceive yourself as a healthy individual and wellness enthusiast, you may be asking yourself “Can CBD even help me?”

It’s a fair question, and one we can personally attest to. As a team dedicated to healthy eating, daily exercise, and regular meditation sessions, we view ourselves as healthy beings in many different ways.

So it makes sense we all love CBD, the fascinatingly therapeutic cannabinoid that consumers far and wide are taking to improve their overall health and well-being. CBD is being incorporated into daily routines to ease pain, anxiety, inflammation, addiction, depression, seizures, and much more.

Can CBD Help Me if I’m Perfectly Healthy?

The answer is yes. CBD can only help you, and cannot harm you. The compound works by interacting with the human Endocannabinoid System (ECS), the system in the body responsible for promoting and maintaining homeostasis.

The ECS regulates everything in our bodies from sleep, mood, memory, digestion, immune function, neural development, and metabolism. This is the reason CBD is able to help so many different symptoms that we experience daily.

Even if you are in the best shape of your life, have no physical ailments and live a generally low-stress life, you can still benefit from CBD.

CBD’s potency can depend on your body weight, among other different variables. These factors can influence your CBD intake and the appropriate dosage. If you take CBD and don’t feel a difference, it doesn’t mean that the CBD isn’t working. It could just mean that you need a higher dose, or that your body is in great shape; in this case, the CBD will work as a preventative measure rather than fixing an issue.

Read on to see how CBD can benefit the ultra health conscious.

10 Ways CBD Benefits Healthy People

The coolest thing about CBD is that it can help with just about everything. This includes the common aches and pains of everyday life. From acne and mood disorders, to upping your workout stamina, taking CBD for preventative measures is a sure fire way to increase your well-being.

1. Sleep:

People have been utilizing cannabis for years as a means to get a good night’s rest. People are replacing THC (the cannabinoid that makes you “high” when you consume cananbis) with CBD. Research and consumer feedback suggest that  CBD Tinctures  and  CBD vape pens  are just as effective for sleep as using marijuana. CBD also provides additional benefits while your slumber, like taming inflammation and correcting digestive functions.

2. Skincare:

Your skin is often viewed as a reflection of your diet, exercise, and even stress levels. Typically, those with healthy lifestyles will have good skin. Staying hydrated, eating organic, and occasional exercise usually translates to clear skin. However, just because you’re a health fanatic doesn’t mean you’re protected from breakouts, rashes, or wrinkles. CBD-infused skincare products work wonders for the skin, and can reduce the risk of rashes, wrinkles, and breakouts. They come in cleansers, scrubs, moisturizers, serums, lip balms, and more. CBD skin care products are said to be extremely effective in maintaining and creating the healthy and flawless skin that everyone wants. This is thanks to CBD’s incredible regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. CBD for skincare is privy to be the next big thing in beauty, so you would be doing yourself a favor by trying it out.

3. Anxiety & Stress:

Even if you aren’t the type of person to stress about things in life, feelings of anxiety and stress are bound to happen to anyone. For times when those unexpected feelings of angst or worry come on, you can be prepared to handle the symptoms with CBD. A lot of people love CBD oil  for it’s convenience and quick digestion. Others prefer vapes, and have reported that it helps them focus on their breathing. Other individuals take CBD capsules, typically as an everyday wellness supplement, for a more gradual way of keeping feelings of anxiety at bay.

4. Pain/Inflammation:

Whether it’s joint pain from running, gut inflammation from eating something spicy, or migraine pain, even the healthiest of people experience some pain and inflammation from time to time. CBD is recognized as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. People experiencing both chronic and mild pain/inflammation have complimented CBD as being life-changing. If it’s back, shoulder, or joint pain you’re experiencing, you can go straight to the source with CBD cream, which targets the inflamed area directly. If it’s internal inflammation you’re experiencing, ingesting CBD could work, and so could rubbing CBD lotion on your abdomen. The cannabinoid works from the inside out, as well as the outside in!

5. Energy:

Coffee not doing the trick when you need it to? Replace your morning cup of Joe with CBD. Or better yet, stir it in with your coffee to create a heightened sense of awareness and focus, without the jitters. CBD lattes have been popping up in various cafes across the U.S., but you can very well make your own. Here’s a guide on how to make a CBD latte that is delicious, nutritious, and filled with the healing benefits you deserve.

6. Travel:

If you are prone to motion sickness when you’re on a flight or in the car, CBD could be your saving grace. CBD contains anti-nauseating properties, making it ideal for those with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues, and travelers on the go. You already know CBD helps with anxiety and sleep, which are common symptoms for people jetting off to new places. CBD for travel is definitely worth looking into, whether you are a globetrotter or just need it for your weekend Uber rides.

7. Cooking:

Did you know people are now cooking with CBD? You do now. Chefs are even infusing CBD into their restaurant menus and premiere dishes. Using a water-soluble CBD oil is your best bet when incorporating the cannabinoid into your gourmet kale and quinoa dishes, veggie stir-frys, or baked goods. Cooking with CBD is an excellent way to reap the health benefits of the cannabinoid if vaping or taking CBD oil on its own isn’t your thing.

8. Headaches:

Headaches aren’t just painful. They’re downright frustrating to deal with when they won’t subside. Whether you’re experiencing a dehydration headache, a stress headache, or a migraine, CBD can help. The cannabinoid is an amazing and natural way to ease that pounding in your head. If you feel one coming on, rub some CBD on your temples, wait 10-15 minutes – and – headache begone.

9. Menstrual Cramps:

This one is exclusive to the ladies. Although sometimes we feel like men could certainly benefit from some menstrual mood relief. Women have been witnessing amazing things happen when they take CBD right before or during their periods. CBD can help subside painful cramps and help improve mood.  CBD is truly a godsend for women who experience painful periods. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD combined with its natural relaxation capabilities explain why the cannabinoid is extremely useful here.

10. Gut Health:

Any wellness expert knows that gut health is a root problem to many dis-functions that can happen in the body. When our gut is inflamed, we can feel sick, anxious, mad, self-conscious, depressed, nauseated, and more. CBD is recognized as one of the best supplements for preventing and fixing digestive issues. These problems can trigger a plethora of unwanted feelings and symptoms because of inflammation. In addition to a proper diet and exercise, CBD can only further enhance your digestive health.  CBD benefits your digestive system in many ways, keeping your internal core stable so you can be high-functioning in every other area of your life.

Epilepsy & CBD

If you haven’t heard the most recent news on CBD, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first ever cannabis medication for epilepsy, named Epidiolex.

Now children, and other people suffering from epilepsy can legally use this CBD medication to help treat symptoms of epilepsy. This is an amazing breakthrough for CBD, and more medications can be seen coming in the near future. You can learn more about Epidiolex  here.

CBD, or  Cannabidiol (CBD), is the main non-psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis. The cannabinoid has been gaining praise recently for its long list of medical benefits. People suffering from physical pain, anxiety, depression, IBS, and other conditions are finding relief through the use of CBD. In addition to these benefits, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning that it does not produce the “high” that is associated with the consumption of cannabis.

We will first explain what epilepsy is and then discuss how CBD can be beneficial to those suffering from epileptic symptoms.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that results in recurring seizures. Approximately 50 million people in the world live with epilepsy. This debilitating condition makes daily tasks like driving, cooking, taking care of children, or holding a job next to impossible in severe cases.

Epileptic seizures are caused by irregular electrical discharges (misfirings) among brain cells, resulting in moderate to violent convulsions of the body, loss of consciousness and occasionally, altered senses (inability to hear or see straight).

Some people are born with epilepsy. Others have developed epilepsy from a bad head injury, a hormonal imbalance in the body, or serious virus. In general, the cause of epilepsy is simply unknown, making it even more frustrating for those suffering from the difficult disease.

How Does CBD Help Epileptic Seizures?

Medical cannabis contains anticonvulsant properties. The cannabis plant contains over 100 chemical compounds – called cannabinoids – with the most recognized cannabinoids being THC (the cannabinoid responsible for getting people high). CBD, however, is where most of the anticonvulsant properties come from.

Since CBD is an anticonvulsant, it affects the neurotransmitters responsible for sending messages or attaching themselves to neurons in the body. As a result, the activity of the cell is altered from switching how the ions flow into and out of the neurons.

A study conducted In 2003 from the Virginia Commonwealth University reported that cannabinoids from the cannabis plant indeed provide health benefits that are not found in conventional pharmaceutical treatments. The lead researcher for the trial had been studying the therapeutic effects of cannabis on epilepsy and other illnesses for over a decade, proving cannabinoids, CBD included, can decrease seizures through the activation of the brain’s CB1 receptors (receptors found in the memory-related areas of the brain and nervous system), which send messages to the brain once CBD is taken.

There have been many success stories from people suffering from epilepsy. Many consumers claim that their loved ones have had a significant reduction in epileptic episodes after taking CBD. It is known to reduce the frequency of seizures, and in some cases has ridden them completely. CBD has truly made a profound impact on their lives, and will continue to positively effect those that need it.

Takeaways

  • CBD may provide relief from epileptic seizures
  • Epilepsy can make it difficult for those affected to live their normal, daily lives.
  • The FDA approved the first legal CBD medication used to treat seizures: Epidiolex
  • It is tough to determine the true causes of epilepsy

How CBD Helps Your Digestive System

CBD, the good-for-you cannabis-derivative, is gaining traction for a ton of therapeutic benefits, including taming painful and downright annoying stomach issues caused by inflammation.

More formally known as cannabidiol, CBD is the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant which is proving useful for everything from calming anxieties to lessening epileptic seizures. (Check out these posts on what is CBD? and the benefits it provides for an overview).

With so much talk lately on digestive health, and with inflammation at the root of our guts’ issues, CBD is looking quite appealing to those with sensitive stomachs.

While inflammation can cause problems in other areas other than our digestive tract (namely pain-related concerns like arthritis, headaches, and red or itchy skin), we are dedicating this post to CBD and inflammation as it pertains to gut health.

From Leaky Gut to Crohn’s Disease, we’ll take a look at how CBD has the potential to heal us from the inside out.

But first, let’s define what inflammation is.

What is Inflammation and What Causes It?

Inflammation is our body’s response to harmful stimuli like junk food, excess stress, and chemicals from the environment.

When your body feels attacked, invaded, or simply uncomfortable, its reaction to those unwanted factors is typically inflammation, which can come in many different forms and can come out of what seems like absolutely nowhere.

You know you have inflammation because you will feel it, and if it’s skin-related, you’ll be able to see it. A skin rash, swelling of a joint, and gut issues like bloating, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS, and Crohn’s Disease are all tell-tale and quite obvious signs of inflammation.

Even though inflammation can be a rude and ugly evil, it can oftentimes be relieved, and even cured, when you know your triggers (like spicy food or lack of exercise). And by taking CBD, your digestive problems may be stopped right in their tracks.

How Does CBD Fight Inflammation?

The most promising area of study relating to CBD as an inflammatory aversion involves the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), the crucial bodily system which works to promote and maintain homeostasis in the body.

CBD has a distinct and direct way of interacting with the ECS that appears promising for therapeutic applications when it comes to inflammation. Here’s how it all comes together:

The ECS produces natural cannabinoids within the body on its own, called endocannabinoids, while CBD acts as an external cannabinoid sending appropriate messages to cannabinoid receptors to warn off first signs of inflammation.

Cannabinoid receptors are mainly concentrated in our brains, stomachs, and intestines, so when CBD comes in contact with them, signals are sent throughout the body to regulate nausea, vomiting, and any overproduction of stomach acid.

As more studies are published proving the relationship between our ECS, cannabinoids, and gut health, there are a few preliminary findings to note when taking CBD for its health benefits. When you take CBD before your stomach is in knots, it should act as a precautionary substance, blocking any inflammation from entering your gut. If CBD is taken after you get that queasy or cramping feeling in your stomach, it will go in and fight areas of inflammation, resulting in you feeling like you can breathe easy again.

Aside from the somewhat “normal” digestive issues caused by not eating right, not exercising, and not fueling your body with the nutrients it craves, some more specific (and very painful) gut issues many people are experiencing today are leaky gut and Crohn’s Disease.

Gastrointestinal Diseases and CBD

Leaky gut happens when the digestive barrier stops functioning properly. Healthy digestive tracts are lined with a mucus barrier which absorbs nutrients from the food we eat, and also prevents larger particles (that should stay put) from escaping.

If the mucus barrier is compromised by inflammation, it allows these large particles through, which isn’t good news. This can cause increased pain, irritation, and more inflammation if it isn’t treated.

Leaky gut is frustrating for medical professionals, too, as there doesn’t seem to be an easy fix for it. But, scientists have set out to determine if cannabinoids like CBD could influence gut permeability, and are discovering potentially promising findings, like those found in this study below:

In a study conducted in 2012, researchers noted the activation of cannabinoid receptors decreased emesis, inflammation, gastric acid secretion and intestinal motility.

While their findings are currently representative of early phases of discovery, they concluded CBD (and THC) have therapeutic potential in leaky gut and Crohn’s Disease.

Final Thoughts

If you have digestive issues like leaky gut, taking CBD to get your body back on track to a normal and healthy digestive tract is definitely worth exploring.

Although many people are already using CBD on a self-prescribed basis for optimal gut health, further research on the subject could legitimize their choice of product and dosage. In the near future, CBD could be a suitable determinant for people with Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and other digestive issues. Pets & CBD

By this point, you have probably heard of CBD as an excellent anxiety-reducer, pain-reliever, and inflammation tamer. But did you know that CBD can be an amazing health supplement for your pups and cats?

That’s right. As CBD continues to prove itself as a great healing agent for humans, research suggests that your pets can reap the same health-boosting benefits from the beneficial compound. In fact, CBD is safe for all mammals because it interacts with the  Endocannabinoid System  (ECS) present in our bodies. The ECS enables us to process cannabinoids like CBD and many others.

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive cannabis compound that is making headlines everywhere due to its marvelous  healing capabilities. CBD can be used for general wellness and for the treatment of illnesses such as anxiety, digestive issues, epilepsy, and more.

As more studies are being conducted to prove CBD’s wide range of therapeutic benefits, we are only just beginning to scratch the surface of the cannabinoid’s healing effects and potential.

Pet owners everywhere have stated that CBD has helped their pet with issues such as anxiety, pain, appetite, and more.

How Can CBD Help My Pet?

Unlike its psychoactive counterpart THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, so it won’t make your pet “high” as THC would. It is non-toxic and can provide your dog with a calming and pain-relieving sensation, without any of the harmful side effects commonly seen with other pet prescriptions.

The benefits of using CBD for your dog or cat are quite incredible, and the CBD market is continuing to grow. This has been opening up a whole new world for pet owners seeking natural remedies for their furry friends.

CBD aims to maintain proper homeostasis within mammals, and can promote and maintain balance in the body. This way, CBD can work to optimize human and pet health. The cannabinoid works to maintain harmony amongst all of the working systems in the body. In addition to this, CBD is known to have powerful therapeutic benefits and has the potential to fight unwanted toxins in the body.

Currently, pet owners can use CBD to treat pets with anxiety, pain, digestive health, seizures, appetite, cancers and overall health.

CBD Can Help With Your Pet’s Anxiety

Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety or get frightened when they are exposed to loud noises? A lot of animals respond negatively to loud stimuli such as thunder, sirens, fireworks, and more. Other pets may experience separation anxiety when they are left at home, leading to reckless behavior. Owners that leave their pets alone for extended periods of time often come home to torn up shoes and ruined furniture.

CBD has been studied extensively for its positive effects on stress and anxiety in humans. Research indicates that the cannabinoid can relieve common and severe anxiety, further proving itself as an effective agent for panic and post-traumatic stress disorders found in both humans and pets.

In short, CBD makes it much easier for the body to relax, relieve tension, and symptoms of anxiety. This is because CBD allows communication between the cannabinoid receptors and the ECS.

CBD Could Help Treat Your Pet’s Pain

If your pet suffers from chronic pain as a result of arthritis, or has difficulty moving around, CBD could potentially remedy their pain. In addition to this, pets that are recovering from recent surgery could enjoy the relief provided by CBD. Because CBD acts as a natural pain reliever, it targets your pets’ aching joints and gives your dog relief from the inflammation. CBD also soothes chronic inflammation that prevents your pet from healing properly.

Giving your pet CBD for pain or inflammation works in the same way as with giving your pet CBD for anxiety – by working in sync with the ECS. The cannabinoid receptors in your pet’s body receive signals from the CBD telling them to fight the targeted or inflamed area, providing comfort and relief.

CBD Aids in Treating Common Pet Diseases

Pets can be susceptible to a variety of diseases. However, the majority of these diseases will carry similar symptoms. Generally, these symptoms can result in chronic pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and possible changes in behavior.

CBD is a multi-purpose health supplement that can help your pet relax by alleviating pain and improving bad habits, such as constant barking or going to the bathroom on your favorite rug.

To that end, CBD can help your pets if they are experiencing inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disease or cardiovascular disease. Your pets can also experience seizures much like humans, and CBD has proved to be a saving grace in helping owners solve this troublesome condition.

CBD is proving to be an effective agent in cancer, as well. Pets tend to have the same symptoms that humans get when they have cancer including nausea, loss of appetite and chronic pain, so it makes sense the therapeutic properties would work all the same in pets.

Pet owners of dogs with cancer have been giving their furry friends small doses of CBD every day as it is showing to dramatically aid in both preventing and killing cancer cells. It does this by helping the immune system kill cancer cells (again, working in conjunction with the ECS), and, because CBD contains anti-tumor properties, it blocks the cancer cells’ ability to produce energy.

Pretty amazing, right?

How is CBD Administered to Pets?

CBD is often given to pets orally, in the form of CBD treats or CBD oil. Although it can be applied topically (for pain and inflammation), the most common methods include pet treats, pet tinctures and even CBD pet food.

While all forms of CBD are perfectly safe, most pet owners are finding the dog treats to work best, as dogs are more prone to accept a treat rather than drops of oil.

Takeaways

  • CBD is safe for animals and can help with chronic pain, arthritis, anxiety, and more.
  • CBD works with the Endocannabinoid system to provide relief for a variety of symptoms.
  • Pets can enjoy CBD through treats, tinctures, and more.

CBD for Runners

If you are a runner, you are probably familiar with the term “runners high” and know very well that it is a true phenomenon. But, what if we told you that “runner’s high” has the potential to be further enhanced by a little something great called CBD?

CBD, the ever so popular wellness compound, has been gaining praise from everyone to researchers and scientists, to health and wellness gurus for its tremendous amount of health benefits.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-intoxicating compound derived from the cannabis plant. The cannabinoid has opened up a whole new world of natural health   thanks to its therapeutic and medical potential.

Aside from CBDs numerous health benefits, research suggests that CBD is able to boost energy levels and help with stamina. We will cover how runners can benefit from the use of CBD, and how they can utilize CBD to reach peak performance during every run.

And, to clarify, this doesn’t just include Olympic athletes and professional runners. CBD can benefit the everyday runner, or the most occasional jogger. Anyone who enjoys running can greatly benefit from taking CBD for athletic performance and overall wellness.

5 Major Ways CBD Benefits Runners

1. CBD Gives You an Energy Boost

On days where you simply don’t feel like getting up and going for a run, CBD can provide that jolt of energy you need to power through a long run.

CBD is known for waking up the body when it feels tired, which is why many people enjoy stirring it in their morning coffees, smoothies, and even food. The cannabinoid is a natural mood elevator, making it a great supplement for long-lasting motivation, helping you to run faster, longer, and further.

2. CBD Provides Quick Pain Relief

Runners run into (pun intended!) plenty of joint pain and inflammation frequently due to the strain that they put on their body. Runners commonly suffer from pain in their knees, lower back, ankles, and feet due to wear and tear. Traditional ways of calming the pain/inflammation include medication, or or the constant application of ice-packs and balms. Not only are these methods unpractical for on the go use, but they don’t provide sustained relief.

CBD topical creams, on the other hand, are known for providing fast and soothing relief that lasts for much longer periods of time.

Pain relief is yet another common use for the beneficial cannabinoid. Whether that pain is from injuries, headaches, or discomfort, CBD can help. The compound binds to receptors in your body, and sends messages to the brain to relieve pain and inflammation in the affected area.

In fact, CBD can actually prevent joint injury while runners train by reducing pain associated with swelling. The cannabinoid is especially helpful when runners need quick relief from pain during or immediately after a workout.

3. CBD Reduces Muscle Cramps and Spasms

Athletes and other active individuals commonly experience muscle spasms and crams from repeated use of muscle tissue. This is especially the case for runners, as their bodies have become accustomed to the swift, up and down, forward-facing motions of quickly picking one foot up after the other.

Muscle spasms often come out of nowhere, and can last from several seconds up to minutes. In addition to this, it is very common for muscle spasms to reoccur. For this reason, runners should always be prepared, and have some CBD by their side just in case.

Applying topical CBD to the area where the muscle spasm is occurring can provide instant relief for runners. CBD topicals or creams work on virtually any muscle group, including the neck, back, stomach, arms and legs of the athlete.

4. CBD Boosts Your Immune System

A lot of people view CBD as their one-a-day health supplement or multivitamin, and for good reason.

CBD is overloaded with antioxidants and is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that can keep sickness at bay and boost immune system function. Because the cannabinoid is all natural, it can be a much better alternative to vitamins, where added ingredients are often unknown.

Remember, CBD is just CBD. It is an all-natural, healing cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, and an ideal supplement for daily use.

Because CBD is rich in antioxidants, it helps the body fight infection quickly and effectively, while aiding in good heart and digestive health. In addition to this, CBD has been shown to reduce the onset of neurodegenerative disorders. Runners taking CBD regularly are able to withstand the strain and stress of intense training, while reaching optimal performance levels.

5. CBD Prevents “Game Day” Anxiety

If you have been training and preparing for a big race, odds are you’re going to feel some game-day jitters or nervousness.

CBD is a well-known anti-anxiolytic, and is commonly used to treat symptoms of anxiety. CBD can help ease the stress and anxieties that everyday life puts on our shoulders.

Taking CBD before a high-pressure event has been proven to dramatically reduce people’s anxiety, allowing their nerves to reside naturally so they are better able to focus on the race instead of their nerves.

Taking CBD is an effective way to enjoy faster recovery from particularly intense workouts and training. In addition, CBD protects runners and other athletes (and active people in general) from severe injuries, enables them to relax comfortably after vigorous workouts, and provides them an extra dose of healthy so they can keep calm and run on.

Takeaways

  • CBD can help runners’ performance by boosting stamina and energy
  • CBD is great for recovery, and can help runners treat sore muscle tissue, muscle cramps, and muscle spasms
  • CBD can boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and relieve a variety of different pains
  • CBD is non-psychoactive and does not create the “high” associated with the consumption of cannabis

CBD vs. CBDa

Cannabidiol (CBD), the popular non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, has been gaining a lot of attention in recent years due to its tremendous therapeutic properties. Studies have proven that this chemical compound can have a significant positive impact on many functions of the human body, including metabolism, mood, appetite, sleep, pain tolerance, and more. It is the second-most prominent cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, after its contrasting psychoactive component, THC. Before processing, CBD is referred to as CBDa, and must undergo the process of decarboxylation before officially becoming refined and processed CBD.

With CBD becoming the most promising cannabinoid for medical research, CBDa has been overlooked in the past. Recently, a new trend of “juicing” raw cannabis has brought CBDa back into the spotlight. Although CBD is derived from CBDa, there is a common misconception that they are the same chemical compound. In actuality, they differ from each other in a number of ways including chemical composition, working mechanism and health benefits.

If they are in fact two different chemical compounds, how does CBDa become CBD?

First, let us explain exactly what CBDa is, then what CBD is, as their own separate elements.

Found in fresh cannabis plants, CBDa is the acidic forerunner to CBD. It has healing properties of its own, and is often processed to maximize these benefits. CBDa will naturally become CBD as it undergoes degradation over time, but can be transformed more quickly through decarboxylation. The  process of decarboxylation  is the act of heating cannabis materials through cooking, vaporizing or smoking. Depending on the amount of time the heat is applied, decarboxylation may turn CBDa into CBD. Because of this, the resultant chemical compound may still contain a trace amount of CBDa.

Differences Between CBDa and CBD:

Chemical Composition

The chemical formulas for CBD and CBDa are C₂₁H₃₀O₂ and C₂₂H₃₀O₄ respectively. The cannabinoid has a more simple chemical composition because of the absence of a carboxylic acid group that is removed during the decarboxylation process. The removal of the carboxyl group turns the inactive components in CBDa into active components, unlocking additional therapeutic properties.

Working Mechanisms

  • Both CBD and CBDa have a positive impact on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which serves to regulate balance in immune response, cellular communication, metabolism, mood, and other bodily functions. While they do not interact directly with the main receptors of the ECS, they can both activate and inhibit other receptors to keep the body healthy.
  • In terms of “working mechanisms,” the main differences between CBD and CBDa lies in the types of receptors they influence:
    • CBD is known to react with adenosine, serotonin and vanilloid receptors to mediate pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression and other conditions.
    • CBD also inhibits the CPR55 receptor to improve bone density, blood pressure, and cancer-fighting abilities.
    • CBDa works by blocking the activities of receptors responsible for causing inflammation, such as COX-1 and COX-2. By doing so, CBDa can reduce seizures, inflammation, and symptoms of diseases.

Researchers have found that CBD and CBDa provide the best results when they work together. This is especially true if the condition results from the improper regulation of multiple systems in the body. In addition to this, recent studies showed that CBDa can enhance the potency of CBD, allowing users to take smaller amounts while retaining the same level of effectiveness.

Health Benefits of CBD and CBDa

Both CBD and CBDa are suitable for healthcare use because they are non-psychoactive, meaning they do not make their users feel “high.” While they have several similar health benefits, these compounds are not entirely the same in terms of therapeutic effects. The process of decarboxylation activates certain dormant medicinal properties of CBDa, but it also results in the loss of beneficial cannabis oils called terpenes. Therefore, CBD does provide a wider range of health benefits but it does not offer as many terpene-related benefits as CBDa.

To date, CBD has been more extensively studied than CBDa. Researchers have found that CBD can help improve the general well-being of an individual, and is said to alleviate many health problems, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Sleeping Difficulty
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Acne
  • Addiction

CBDa has gotten significantly less attention from research in comparison to CBD. Because of this, CBDa’s true potential is relatively unknown. However, experts have discovered that it can help treat a number of health conditions so far (Note: some are similar to those of CBD) including:

  • Bacterial Infection
  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Seizure
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Anxiety
  • Psychotic Disorders

Despite their differences, both CBD and CBDa can be extremely beneficial to anyone’s health. Whether you wish to use these powerful compounds to treat a specific condition or to improve general health, it is important that you select products that are effective and safe.

Takeaways

  • CBD is a substance with a curative effect that can be used for a variety of unwanted symptoms.
  • CBDa is a strong variant of CBD containing heightened value which results in a strengthened effect.
  • CBD and CBDa are beneficial compounds by themselves and when working together.
  • CBD and CBDa contain no psychoactive substances, and therefore have no mind-altering effects.
